The Lagos State Government unveiled plans on Tuesday, 15 November 2022, for a new international airport to be sited in the Epe area of the state, describing the project as a long-term response to growing congestion at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
State officials said the proposed facility would be developed in phases, beginning with a single runway capable of handling domestic and regional traffic before an eventual expansion to accommodate wide-body international flights as demand grows over the following decade.
A Long-Term Bet on Growth
The state's commissioner for transportation said Lagos's air travel demand had continued to outpace the existing airport's capacity despite recent terminal upgrades, and that a second airport was necessary to secure the state's position as West Africa's leading aviation hub over the coming decades.
Officials acknowledged that funding and land allocation details were still being finalised, and that a full feasibility study would be required before construction timelines could be confirmed, with private investment expected to play a significant role in financing the project.
